Gold Prices Fall Today Amid Rising Oil Prices and Inflation Fears Ahead of the Fed Meeting
Gold prices fell during Tuesday’s trading session, affected by rising oil prices and renewed concerns about inflation, as investors await the upcoming U.S. Federal Reserve meeting for new signals regarding the future of interest rates and monetary policy in the United States.
The price of gold in spot trading fell 0.5% to $4,120.87 per ounce by 11:03 GMT, while U.S. gold futures for December delivery fell by the same percentage to $4,139.90 per ounce.
This decline comes amid growing concerns over persistent inflationary pressures resulting from rising energy costs, which could prompt the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates high for a longer period or tighten monetary policy if economic conditions warrant it.
Rising Oil Prices Increase Pressure on Gold
Oil prices rose during Tuesday’s trading, with Brent crude approaching its highest level in five months, amid escalating geopolitical concerns linked to Houthi attacks on Saudi infrastructure, as well as reports of ships being targeted in the Gulf region.
Rising energy prices are fueling concerns about renewed inflationary pressures, as higher oil costs could lead to increases in transportation, production, and commodity and service prices, which could affect inflation rates and influence central bank decisions.
In this context, Ricardo Evangelista, Managing Director and CEO of “ActivTrades” (ActivTrades), explained that persistent inflationary pressures, driven by rising energy prices, are reinforcing expectations of a tightening of U.S. monetary policy.
This situation affects gold prices, as rising interest rate expectations may reduce the appeal of the precious metal—which does not generate periodic returns—compared to assets that provide returns to investors.
U.S. Interest Rate Expectations Weigh on Gold
Investors are turning their attention to the U.S. Federal Reserve meeting scheduled for October 27 and 28, looking for clues regarding the path of interest rates in the coming months.
Although markets widely expect interest rates to remain unchanged at the October meeting, attention is focused on central bank officials’ statements and guidance regarding the possibility of a rate hike in December.
Remarks by some Federal Reserve officials, suggesting there is no urgent need for further monetary tightening, have contributed to a decline in expectations for an interest rate hike during the October meeting.
Nevertheless, expectations for monetary tightening in December remain high, with the Chicago Mercantile Exchange’s “FedWatch” tool indicating a 92% probability of a rate hike that month.
This factor represents potential downward pressure on gold prices, as higher interest rates increase the cost of holding non-yielding assets, while a decline in expectations for monetary tightening could boost the appeal of gold. Upcoming U.S.
Inflation Data Will Determine Gold’s Direction
Investors are also awaiting the release of U.S. Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) data—the Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of inflation—in search of further clues regarding the direction of monetary policy.
This data could influence investors’ expectations regarding interest rate decisions and, consequently, the movements of the dollar, U.S. bond yields, and gold prices.
If the data shows that inflationary pressures persist, expectations that interest rates will remain high for longer may increase, which could limit gold’s gains.
If, on the other hand, the readings come in below market expectations, bets on monetary tightening may recede, which could provide support for the precious metal.
However, the market reaction will depend on how closely the data aligns with prevailing expectations, as well as other economic and geopolitical factors.
The Bank of Japan Is Closely Monitoring Inflation
On the global monetary policy front, Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda said that the country’s core inflation has come very close to the 2% target, hinting at the possibility of further interest rate hikes if economic conditions permit.
These remarks reflect the continued focus of global central banks on inflation trends, as they strive to strike a balance between price stability and supporting economic activity.
Gold Price Forecast for the Coming Period
In the coming period, gold price movements will remain linked to developments in oil prices, U.S. inflation trends, and expectations regarding the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decisions.
Continued rises in energy prices could heighten inflationary concerns and reinforce expectations that U.S. monetary policy will remain tight, which may limit gold’s ability to post strong gains.
Conversely, a decline in expectations for interest rate hikes or signs of slowing inflation could provide support for gold.
Therefore, investors are awaiting the Federal Reserve meeting and U.S. personal consumption expenditures data to assess the likely direction of gold and dollar prices in the coming period, as markets continue to be influenced by geopolitical developments and energy price volatility.
Here, we review the outlook for gold as the year comes to a close.
