Gold Rises Today After the Market digested the Fed's decision

Gold Rises After Fed Decision as Oil Prices Fall

Gold prices rose on Thursday as investors digested the U.S. Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision, while oil prices gave up some of their recent gains, providing additional support for the precious metal.

The spot price of gold climbed more than 1% to $4,310 per ounce, after hitting a nearly six-week low in the previous session.

The rise in gold prices came despite the U.S. Federal Reserve’s decision to raise interest rates; it appears that markets have already priced in much of the central bank’s hawkish messaging, while falling oil prices and technical factors are providing some support for gold.

The updated quarterly economic projections show that 16 out of 18 Federal Reserve officials expect interest rates to rise by at least 25 basis points before the end of the year, while only two officials expect rates to remain at their current levels.

Higher interest rates typically put pressure on gold, as the precious metal does not generate a yield, while interest-bearing assets become more attractive to investors.

Technical Factors Support a Recovery in Gold Prices

The current rise in gold prices is largely driven by technical factors, as markets have already priced in the Federal Reserve’s hawkish stance.

Consequently, gold’s movement may remain limited within a certain range in the near term, especially as uncertainty persists regarding the direction of U.S. interest rates.

This means that markets may focus in the coming period on U.S. economic data and statements from Federal Reserve officials in search of new signals regarding the path of monetary policy.

Falling Oil Prices May Support Gold

Meanwhile, oil prices continued to decline after losing the momentum that had driven them higher earlier, amid reports that Saudi Arabia is offering additional crude shipments via Oman.

The trend in oil prices is one of the key factors to watch for gold, as a continued decline in oil prices could support gold prices, at least from a medium-term perspective.

This is because falling energy prices may ease some inflationary pressures, which in turn could influence market expectations regarding interest rates.

Why Is Gold Rising Despite Higher Interest Rates?

Gold is closely linked to expectations regarding interest rates, the dollar, and bond yields. When interest rates rise, the cost of holding gold increases relative to assets that generate a return.

However, the impact of interest rates is not always direct or immediate. If markets have already priced in the Fed’s decision and its future expectations, investors’ attention may shift to other factors, such as technical movements, bond yields, and energy prices.

Therefore, today’s rise in gold prices does not necessarily signal a change in the underlying trend of U.S. monetary policy, but rather reflects the market’s reaction to information that is already known.

What Are Investors Watching in the Gold Market?

In the coming period, traders will focus on several key factors that could determine the direction of gold prices, foremost among them:

- The trajectory of U.S. interest rates.

- Statements by Federal Reserve officials.

- Movements in the U.S. dollar and Treasury yields.

- U.S. inflation and economic data.

- Oil price trends and their impact on inflation expectations.

- Geopolitical developments that could affect demand for gold as a safe-haven asset.
