Gold prices rise following weak US jobs data and a rise in unemployment in September

Gold Prices Rise Following US Jobs Slowdown and Unemployment Uptick – Are Rate Hike Bets Receding?

Global gold prices rose by more than 1% during Friday's trading after US labor market data revealed a notable slowdown in job growth for September and a rise in the unemployment rate.

These figures bolstered investor expectations that the Federal Reserve might adopt a less aggressive stance on interest rates in the near term.
The precious metal's gains coincided with a decline in US Treasury yields and a drop in the dollar index.

Meanwhile, US stock futures posted significant gains following the report, which markets interpreted as a signal of a gradual slowdown in the US economy.

US Jobs Report Misses Expectations

Data from the US Department of Labor showed that the economy added only 29,000 jobs in September a figure well below market expectations, which had anticipated the addition of approximately 89,000 jobs.
Additionally, August's figures were revised downward to show 133,000 jobs added, down from the previous reading, fueling concerns about the slowing pace of hiring in the world's largest economy.
At the same time, the unemployment rate rose to 4.2% from 4.1% in August, defying expectations that it would remain stable at the previous level.

Why Did Gold Prices Rise After the Jobs Data?

Gold is viewed as a key asset that benefits when expectations for US interest rate hikes decline.

Whenever economic data shows signs of a slowdown, the likelihood of monetary policy easing—or the postponement of further interest rate hikes—increases.

This supports demand for gold as a safe-haven asset and a hedge against economic risks.

Following the report's release, gold prices rose to around $4,225 per ounce, buoyed by a weakening dollar and falling US bond yields; prices are currently trading near the $4,185-per-ounce level.

Waning Bets on US Interest Rate Hikes

Weak employment data prompted a repricing of market expectations regarding upcoming Federal Reserve decisions.
The probability of an interest rate hike at the next meeting dropped significantly, as investors concluded that slowing job growth and rising unemployment reduced the need for further monetary tightening in the near term.
Analysts believe that any additional signs of a US economic slowdown in the coming months could prompt the Federal Reserve to pause before taking further action on interest rates.
US Stocks Rise Following the Report

Financial markets reacted positively to the report, with futures for major US indices rising after the data was released.
S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures posted gains as investor bets grew that monetary policy would remain stable in the near future.
Investors view the labor market slowdown as a factor that could ease pressure on the Federal Reserve and reduce the likelihood of continued aggressive interest rate hikes.

US Bond Yields Decline

The US bond market saw widespread buying following the data release, driving yields down; the yield on the two-year Treasury note most sensitive to interest rate expectations—fell, as did yields on 10-year and 30-year bonds.
Falling yields are a positive factor for gold, as they reduce the opportunity cost of holding the precious metal compared to yield-bearing assets.

US Dollar Sheds Some Gains

The US Dollar Index retreated after the report's release as investors reassessed the likelihood of interest rate hikes.
A weaker dollar typically supports gold prices, making the yellow metal less expensive for buyers holding other currencies.

Does the Report Signal Genuine Weakness in the US Economy?

Although the September data came in weaker than expected, many experts believe the US labor market remains resilient.
Unemployment claims remain near historic lows, and US companies continue to post strong profits that support employment levels.
Some economists suggest that seasonal factors related to data calculation methods may have contributed to the weak September figures, particularly given the timing of this year's Labor Day holiday.
Meanwhile, markets are monitoring the impact of rising energy prices and global geopolitical tensions on economic activity and the labor market in the coming months.

Gold Price Outlook for the Coming Period

The future trajectory of gold prices depends on a range of key factors, most notably:
- Upcoming US inflation data
- The Federal Reserve's stance on interest rates
- US labor market performance
- Movements in the US dollar and bond yields
- Global geopolitical developments
If economic indicators continue to signal a gradual slowdown in US economic activity, gold may continue to benefit from waning expectations of monetary tightening, thereby supporting the potential for further gains in the period ahead.
