Gold Prices Fall Today as Oil Rises and Investors Await the Fed’s Decision
Gold prices fell on Wednesday, giving up the previous session’s gains of more than 1%, amid pressure from rising oil prices and renewed inflation concerns, as investors awaited the U.S. Federal Reserve’s decision on interest rates, looking for new signals regarding the direction of monetary policy in the coming period.
The price of gold in spot trading fell by 0.8% to around $4,028 per ounce, while U.S. gold futures for December delivery declined by a similar percentage, settling at around $4,043 per ounce.
Rising Oil Prices Weigh on Gold Prices
The decline in gold coincided with a rise in crude oil prices of more than 1% during Wednesday’s trading, following an attack on an oil refinery in Saudi Arabia, which reignited concerns about the stability of oil supplies from one of the world’s leading energy exporters.
Rising oil and energy prices increase inflationary pressures, which could prompt the U.S. Federal Reserve to keep interest rates at elevated levels for a longer period or delay any move toward monetary easing.
These expectations weigh negatively on gold, which does not generate a yield for its holders, as the opportunity cost of holding it rises relative to assets that benefit from higher interest rates.
Federal Reserve Meeting in the Spotlight
Investors are focusing on the Federal Reserve’s decision, scheduled to be announced at 9:00 p.m. Egypt time, amid widespread expectations that interest rates will remain unchanged.
Traders are also awaiting statements from U.S. central bank officials, looking for clues regarding the extent to which rising energy prices are affecting inflation expectations and the likelihood of continued tight monetary policy in the coming months.
In this context, observers believe that the Fed’s continued cautious approach toward cutting interest rates could pose an obstacle to a short-term recovery in gold prices, especially if oil prices continue to rise and inflation concerns intensify.
U.S. Inflation Data May Determine Gold’s Direction
In addition to the Fed’s decision, markets are awaiting the release of U.S. personal consumption expenditures data on Thursday, a key indicator the Fed uses to gauge inflation.
This data, along with statements from the central bank, is expected to influence expectations for interest rates and the U.S. dollar—and, consequently, gold’s movement in the coming trading sessions.
If the data reinforces concerns about persistent inflation, expectations that interest rates will remain high may increase, which could put pressure on gold. Conversely, signs of a slowdown in inflation could support expectations of monetary policy easing and give gold a chance to recoup some of its gains.
Gold Price Forecasts for the Coming Period
According to data from the “FedWatch” tool from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, traders widely expect interest rates to remain unchanged at Wednesday’s meeting, while the estimates indicate an approximately 84% probability of a rate hike in December.
Given these factors, movements in oil prices, inflation expectations, and the trajectory of U.S. monetary policy will remain among the key factors influencing gold prices in the coming period.
The precious metal may face additional pressure if expectations of higher interest rates persist, while it could benefit from a weaker dollar or signs that the Federal Reserve is moving toward a less hawkish monetary policy.
