Gold Rises Today as the Dollar Weakens and Investors Await the Fed’s Decision
Gold prices rose slightly on Thursday, supported by a weaker U.S. dollar, while investors await the release of U.S. inflation data, which could play a key role in determining the direction of U.S. interest rates in the coming period.
Markets are focusing on the U.S. Producer Price Index data ahead of Friday’s Consumer Price Index release, amid diverging views between market expectations and economists’ opinions regarding the Federal Reserve’s next move.
Gold Prices Today as the Dollar Weakens
The spot price of gold rose 0.5% to reach $4,415 per ounce. In contrast, U.S. gold futures for December delivery fell 0.1% to around $4,457.20 per ounce.
The rise in gold prices comes as the U.S. dollar faces pressure, which has helped boost the precious metal’s appeal to investors, especially since the weakness of the U.S. currency makes dollar-denominated gold less expensive for holders of other currencies.
U.S. Inflation Data in the Spotlight
Markets are awaiting the release of U.S. Producer Price Index (PPI) data today at 3:30 p.m. Egypt time, followed by Consumer Price Index (CPI) data tomorrow, Friday.
These data points are of great importance to the gold, currency, and bond markets, as the results could influence investors’ expectations regarding the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy path.
If inflation data shows that price pressures persist, the Fed may become more committed to a tighter monetary policy, while signs of slowing inflation could give markets more room to anticipate monetary easing.
Divergence Between Market and Economist Expectations on U.S. Interest Rates
Markets are showing a clear divergence regarding the future of U.S. interest rates.
According to a Reuters survey, the majority of economists expect the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates unchanged at its meeting scheduled for September 15 and 16, with rates remaining stable through the end of the year.
In contrast, market participants’ expectations point to a different scenario: the CME Group’s FedWatch tool shows that investors are pricing in a nearly 60% probability of a U.S. interest rate hike in September.
This divergence makes the upcoming inflation data all the more important, as the actual inflation reading could lead to a repricing of market expectations regarding the Fed’s upcoming decisions.
How Do Interest Rates Affect Gold?
Higher interest rates typically put pressure on gold, as the precious metal does not provide a periodic return to its holders, unlike bonds and other assets that benefit from rising yields.
When interest rate expectations rise, capital may flow toward yield-bearing assets, which reduces gold’s appeal.
Conversely, falling interest rates or declining expectations of rate hikes may support gold, especially if this coincides with a decline in U.S. Treasury yields and a weakening dollar.
Therefore, U.S. inflation data remains one of the most important drivers that could determine the direction of gold in the coming period.
U.S. Fiscal Concerns Support Gold
In addition to movements in the dollar and interest rates, gold is receiving support from concerns regarding the U.S. government’s fiscal situation.
Investors believe that ongoing fiscal pressures and rising levels of government debt could affect long-term confidence in U.S. debt and in the currency used to finance it, which reinforces gold’s role as a hedge during times of heightened financial risk.
U.S. government debt surpassed the $40 trillion mark for the first time last month, prompting renewed warnings about the rising risks associated with the U.S. fiscal situation.
Such concerns are prompting some investors to increase their exposure to assets viewed as a hedge against financial and monetary risks, foremost among them gold.
Geopolitical Tensions Increase Gold Price Volatility
On the geopolitical front, Iran announced on Wednesday that it had attacked 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz in response to the U.S. sinking of five Iranian oil tankers.
These developments come amid an escalating confrontation between the United States and Iran, making shipping traffic in the region one of the most significant sources of risk for global markets.
What Lies Ahead for Gold in the Coming Period?
U.S. inflation data remains the key factor currently being monitored by the markets, especially as the Federal Reserve’s September meeting approaches.
Gold prices are expected to react significantly to the Producer Price Index (PPI) data, followed by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), as well as movements in the dollar and U.S. Treasury yields.
In general, a continued decline in the dollar and slowing inflation could provide additional support for gold, while stronger-than-expected inflation data could fuel bets on interest rate hikes, which could put pressure on the precious metal.
