Gold prices are down today but remain high on a weekly basis
Gold prices fell today, Friday, extending the losses recorded in the previous session, affected by a rise in crude oil prices, which raised concerns about renewed inflationary pressures and reinforced expectations that the U.S. Federal Reserve will take more hawkish steps regarding interest rates.
Gold Price Movements Today
Gold markets saw significant volatility during today’s trading, with gold falling 0.6% to touch $4,023 per ounce, extending its 2% decline from the previous session.
The precious metal subsequently pared its losses, rising to near $4,040 per ounce.
Despite these declines, gold is still on track to post modest weekly gains of about 0.5% so far, and we expect it to close the week higher.
Escalating Geopolitical Tensions
Pressure on financial and commodity markets followed rapid developments in the Middle East, where U.S. President Donald Trump vowed to impose significant military retaliation against Iran and its Houthi allies, following the Houthis attack on two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea.
Anticipation of Interest Rate Decisions: The U.S. Federal Reserve and the European Central
Bank Investors and traders are turning their attention to upcoming central bank meetings to gauge the direction of the markets:
1- The U.S. Federal Reserve
Analysts unanimously expect interest rates to remain unchanged at next week’s meeting.
Traders estimates also indicate an 81% probability of an interest rate hike at the upcoming September meeting to combat high inflation.
2. European Central Bank
The ECB decided to keep interest rates at their current, expected levels.
The ECB left the door open to the possibility of approving a new interest rate hike at its September meeting, depending on upcoming economic data.
What Lies Ahead for Gold Prices?
Gold price movements in the coming period will continue to be influenced by several key factors, most notably:
- The outcome of the U.S. Federal Reserve meeting.
- Developments in oil prices and global inflation.
- The trajectory of the U.S. dollar and Treasury yields.
- The escalation or easing of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
If expectations of interest rate hikes persist, gold may remain under pressure in the short term, while any geopolitical escalation or a decline in the dollar could support the precious metal and allow it to recoup some of its losses.
