Gold Trades Near 7-Week Low Amid Anticipation of Key U.S. Data
Gold prices are trading near their lowest levels in more than 7 weeks during Tuesday’s session, as investors await the release of a series of key U.S. economic data points that could determine the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy path in the coming period.
Spot gold rose slightly by 0.6% to around $4,140 per ounce, after hitting its lowest level since early August in the previous session.
High Interest Rate Pressures Weigh on Gold Prices
The precious metal continues to face strong pressure due to growing expectations that the U.S. Federal Reserve will keep interest rates at elevated levels for a longer period, which reduces gold’s appeal as a non-yielding asset compared to other interest-rate-linked investment instruments.
Market estimates indicate that the probability of a U.S. interest rate hike at the upcoming October meeting has risen to about 72.5 percent, up from 57.6 percent just a week ago, according to financial market data.
Geopolitical Tensions and Oil Prices Fuel Inflation Fears
At the same time, geopolitical developments in the Middle East continue to capture investors’ attention, especially as diplomatic efforts to end the months-long conflict continue, Analysts believe that any new escalation could lead to continued rises in energy prices and bond yields, while progress in de-escalation efforts could help ease pressure on the markets.
Oil prices also extended their gains for the second consecutive session amid concerns over potential disruptions to global supplies, which are fueling fears of a resurgence in inflationary pressures.
Rising energy prices typically lead to higher production and transportation costs, which could prompt central banks to adopt tighter monetary policies.
Markets Await Key U.S. Economic Data
This week, investors are awaiting the release of a number of important U.S. economic indicators, most notably consumer confidence data, job openings, and the ADP private-sector employment report, as well as the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index and the nonfarm payrolls report.
These data points are particularly important because they provide indicators of the strength of the U.S. economy and inflation levels, which could directly influence the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decisions during upcoming meetings.
Gold Price Forecasts
Analysts believe that persistent inflationary pressures, coupled with strong U.S. economic activity, may prompt central banks to maintain tight monetary policies for a longer period, which could continue to put pressure on gold prices and limit their chances of recovery in the near term.
Despite today’s price increase, gold prices remain under pressure from growing expectations of persistently high interest rates in the United States, while markets are closely monitoring upcoming economic data and geopolitical developments that could determine the precious metal’s direction in the coming period.
