Energy stocks lead FTSE 100 gains as geopolitical tensions escalate
The UK's FTSE 100 index rose 0.16%, outperforming Germany's DAX and France's CAC 40, which both declined, while the pound fell 0.13% against the dollar. British stocks were primarily supported by the energy and consumer staples sectors, with Centrica, BP, and Shell shares rising on the back of improved oil prices.
The gains in energy companies coincided with escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz after an attack on a vessel resulted in damage and the death of a crew member, raising concerns about shipping and energy supplies. Kpler data also showed a significant decrease in ship traffic through the strait, coinciding with escalating Iranian rhetoric about preparing for military action if diplomatic efforts fail.
Whitbread and Marks & Spencer shares also rose, leading the index's gains during the session.
