Reports from Axios have reported that House Republicans have switched from optimistic caution to the expectation of a government shutdown.
In the coming weeks, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson will have to choose between fighting with Democrats who are threatening a shutdown, or making a deal with them that would threaten his job.
One Republican lawmaker said he expected a shutdown, even if it was only for a few days.
There are reports that they are either on the verge of reaching an agreement or it is on the verge of an explosion, as one of the subcommittee chairmen said recently.
The government will begin a partial shutdown unless the budget or spending gap is passed by the first of March, and a full shutdown will also take place if there is no budget or temporary gap by March 8.
The key deadline is April 30, so if there is no new budget by then, this will lead to a 1% reduction in overall spending, and Democrats will not support a temporary bill that goes beyond this.
