The far-right National Rally party failed to live up to expectations, But no coalition has been able to win a majority in parliament, which means that months of deadlock may lie ahead.
France is on its way to a hung parliament, divided between three large groups, where France will be in a political impasse after no party has come close to winning an absolute majority, unless the left can make agreements with other parties.
According to preliminary results, the Left-Green coalition called the new Popular Front is currently expected to get the most seats in the French National Assembly, with 172-192 seats, while the centrist alliance led by French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to get 150-170 seats, and the far-right National Rally party has dropped to third place and is now expected to get 132-152 seats.
Who will be the next prime minister ?
Prime minister Gabriel Attal announced that he will resign from his post on Monday, but it is still unclear who his successor will be.
Sunday's results mean that Macron faces the prospect of having to appoint a figure from the left-wing coalition, however, figures in Macron's party have repeatedly said that they will refuse to work with these parties, saying that they are completely extremist, and therefore unfit to govern, like the National Front party.
The Elysee said in a brief statement that Macron is waiting for the full results of all 577 constituencies before making the necessary decisions.
As the guarantor of our institutions, the president will ensure that the sovereign choice of the French people is respected.
Edouard Philippe, a former French prime minister and Macron ally, said that the situation is complicated, since the president's gamble of calling early elections led to great uncertainty, and none of the political blocs in the council has a majority on its own to govern, therefore the central political forces bear the responsibility for survival.
Without any concessions, they must work to reach an agreement that would lead to the stabilization of the political situation.
