Europe is considering relying on American gas instead of Russian supplies

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has raised the possibility of reducing the EU’s dependence on Russian gas and importing more from the United States.

Von der Leyen made the reference during a recent phone call with US President-elect Donald Trump, she said on Friday.

“LNG was one of the topics we discussed,” von der Leyen said. “We still get a lot of LNG from Russia, so why not replace it with cheaper US gas and lower our energy prices?”

The United States is already the largest supplier of LNG to Europe, but Russia is a distant second. European officials are looking for ways to rein in Moscow’s role in the energy sector as the war in Ukraine continues, although Russian pipeline gas and LNG remain largely outside the scope of sanctions.
