China unveils new tool to cut deep-sea cables

Is China planning a new technological war in the deep sea

Chinese researchers have unveiled a new deep-sea tool capable of cutting the safest submarine cables in the world, which has worried many in the West, this tool may cause a shift in the global balance of power, this tool is capable of cutting cables that transmit about 95% of global internet traffic.

Developed by the China Center for global marine research, the instrument operates at depths of up to 13,000 feet 4,000 meters under the sea, far beyond the operational range of most existing infrastructures, meaning that this instrument can be used for other purposes with far-reaching implications for global communications and security.

This tool uses a diamond-plated grinding wheel to cut steel-reinforced cables.

Despite being presented as a tool for deep-sea rescue and marine exploration, experts warn that it could be used for military purposes, although Chinese researchers emphasize that its use is peaceful, but its ability to sabotage has caused global concern.

Recent submarine cable damage incidents near Taiwan and Northern Europe have raised concerns about the vulnerabilities of these systems, and doubts about the role of State-linked actors.
