Bitcoin faces a tough bet in 2026 as chances of returning to $100,000 dwindle

Bitcoin in 2026: Will it plummet to $40,000 or rebound to $100,000?

Bitcoin's price faces increasing challenges in 2026, with traders losing optimism about the cryptocurrency's ability to reclaim the $100,000 level. Some predictions even suggest a potential drop to around $40,000.

These predictions come amid continued pressure on the cryptocurrency market, after Bitcoin lost a significant portion of its previous gains and entered a prolonged downward trend, prompting investors to reassess their expectations for the currency's trajectory for the remainder of the year.

Bitcoin's Probability to Reach $100,000 Declines

Data from the predictions market Polymarket shows a sharp decline in the probability of Bitcoin reaching $100,000 or higher in 2026. According to the data, the probability of Bitcoin reaching $100,000 has dropped to just 9%, compared to around 91% last January, a significant shift reflecting a decrease in traders' appetite for the cryptocurrency's bullish scenario.

The probability of Bitcoin reaching $90,000 has also declined from 71% in early May to around 16% now, indicating that traders have become more cautious about the currency's ability to achieve a strong recovery this year.

Will Bitcoin Drop to $40,000?

Conversely, bearish scenarios are gaining more attention from investors, as market forecasts indicate a significant probability of Bitcoin's price falling to levels much lower than current levels.

Traders anticipate a 23% probability of Bitcoin falling below $45,000, while the probability of it dropping below $40,000 is around 15%.

These figures reflect the wide range of expectations surrounding Bitcoin's price movement, amidst the ongoing uncertainty in the cryptocurrency market and the fluctuating risk appetite of investors.

Divergent Outlook on Bitcoin's Future

Despite the decline in bullish expectations, analysts disagree on a single direction for Bitcoin's price. Views clearly diverge between those who expect the decline to continue and those who believe the currency may regain strength after the current correction phase ends.

Renowned analyst Alessio Rastani predicts that Bitcoin will face a significant downward wave that could push its price to around $20,000 by the end of 2027, before beginning a sharp recovery later.

Conversely, Matt Hogan, chief investment officer at Bitwise, believes that Bitcoin's resilience to negative news, including sell-offs, may indicate underlying strength in the market, even amidst continued volatility.

Bitcoin has lost nearly half its value since its all-time high

Bitcoin reached an all-time high of around $126,198 in October 2025 before experiencing a sharp decline that saw it lose nearly half its value from that level.

This decline highlights the significant shift in the cryptocurrency market, especially after a prolonged period of optimism about Bitcoin's potential to continue reaching new record highs.

As the price continues to fall from its all-time peak, investors are increasingly focusing on key support levels, the direction of liquidity in the cryptocurrency market, and Bitcoin's ability to attract new buyers.

What will determine Bitcoin's direction in 2026?

The future price of Bitcoin in 2026 depends on a number of factors, most notably investor appetite for high-risk assets, global monetary policy, liquidity flows into the cryptocurrency market, and buying and selling activity by major investors.

Bitcoin's ability to recapture key resistance levels will also be crucial in determining whether the currency can initiate a new upward trend or if the downward trend will persist.

If risk appetite returns to the markets and capital flows into cryptocurrencies improve, Bitcoin's recovery prospects could be strengthened.

Conversely, continued selling pressure and weak demand could increase the likelihood of testing lower levels, including $45,000 and $40,000.
