Biden administration imposes new, tougher sanctions on Russia

The United States today imposed unprecedented new sanctions on the Russian energy sector

The expected sanctions target oil and liquefied natural gas as part of the United States' strategy to increase support for Ukraine, as it is expected to include the largest Russian oil companies and 183 tankers in the "shadow fleet", with the aim of reducing Russia's energy revenues and increasing its economic costs, according to what US officials revealed in a press conference via telephone attended by "Asharq".

In his last days in the White House, President Joe Biden seeks to fulfill his commitment to the Group of Seven to increase the costs and risks for Russian President Vladimir Putin as long as he continues the war on Europe. A US official said: "The United Kingdom is expected to join these sanctions to push buyers away from Russian oil and move to buy oil from other producers, and prevent Moscow from accessing the goods it needs to build weapons."
